WE ARE MOVING

We have finally outgrown our ability to extend and divide our much loved villa in McBride St. After looking at many options we have decided to redevelope the former BNZ building which lies between King Edward St and Rankeilor St in South Dunedin. The new address will be 44 Rankeilor St and we hope to move in on the 3rd of January 2010 - 21 years to the day since we opened in McBride St. The phone number will stay the same - 456 2345. Telephone still manned 24/7. Just more room to move, nicer surroundings, easier parking, better use of peoples time and energy to better help our clients and our patients. So another first for Dunedin South Vet Clinic - opening a vet clinic in a bank! Directions from the old clinic to the new - head up McBride St towards the Westpac bank, turn first right into Rankeilor St and the new building is on your left 50 m down the street.

No need for rectal thermometers!

Also finally available in New Zealand (and we believe we are the first vet in the country with this technology) we have Biothermo microchips. These identichips act exactly like normal ID chips as required for all dogs in New Zealand, but they also reflect back the animals temperature. No more rectal thermometers. This means more accurate temperature reading as there is no stress involved in taking the animals temperature. Where frequent patient temperature checks are needed this will be much more easily done and therefore done on the frequency needed. Some cats just hate rectal themometers and we just cannot get a useful deep body temperature from these animals - problem solved! And for those dogs who feel their privacy is being abused - the answer is finally here. As a special introductory please quote the code MICBIODIS to receive a 20% discount on the cost of the chip and implanting.

Holter Monitoring

We have available for rental a Holter monitor. This is simply an extended ECG recorder which is fitted to your pet and left in place for 24 hours. The value of this is that in many heart diseases rhythm disturbances occur only now and then. With the Holter we have a much better chance of recording them over 24 hours than with a paper strip recorder (usually only a minute recording at a time) or even our CRT display monitor as used in surgery. Automatic X-ray Processing

The clinic has invested in an automatic X-ray processor. This upgrade means mnore consistency in developing X-ray pictures (radiographs). With manual processing errors such as light leakage, scraping the film on the tank sides and variation in developer temperature and strength all degrade the quality of the radiograph produced. With autromatic processing these problems are hugely reduced or eliminated, giving clean dry consistent radiographs. This leaves us to concentrate on correct positioning and exposure factors, then interpretting those beautiful fresh dry pictures from the processor. Ultrasound - More than Pregnancy Diagnosis

Ultrasound technology was introduced to this clinic many years ago with a second hand machine purchased from the local hospital. This machine had a linear array scanner head which gave relatively easily interpreted images but was cumbersome to use and limited in application. Following a full day course run by Hilary Burbidge it became clear an upgrade was needed, and within a further 2 years a further upgrade was undertaken. These equipment upgrades mirror skill improvements gained with experience and courses. Tell me more about Ultrasound.

Laboratory Services

In the late 1990's the clinic invested in an Idexx blood analyser machine. This has allowed us to add biochemistry and haematology assessments to the range of laboratory services offered by the clinic. In addition we have a good quality microscope which is in daily use and routinely run urinalyses, mite exams and cytology. One of the most common lab procedures undertaken is cytology of ear debris.
